ISDN

What is ISDN?

What are the parts of ISDN?

The ISDN System is divided in four parts:

1. COT (Central Office Terminal): the telephone company's local facility that provides telephone service in the area

2. TA (Terminal Adapter): the device that connects between ISDN and the telecommunication equipment

3. NTI (Network Terminal 1): the device that connects the ISDN and works as a converter between an ISDN U-Interface and an ISDN S/T Interface. Some ISDN Adaptors have a TA already built into them (also known as a Smart ISDN) making it easier and less expensive than an external NT-1, but may prevent one from connecting other equipment to the ISDN line

4. TE (Terminal Equipment): examples include an ISDN phone, ISDN telefax, PC, etc.
